Northern Rivers Big Band to appear in Kyogle at the KMI hall Sunday 28th March 2010
The Northern Rivers Big Band has been performing Swing music on the Far North Coast of NSW for about 60 years. Their music is a re-creation of that wonderful era of “times gone by” where the music is “recognisable, understandable, danceable, big and all around you”. The Kyogle and District Arts Council are bringing the Big Band to Kyogle to perform at the Kyogle Memorial Institute on Sunday 28th March 2010 at 2pm.
First formed and led by extrovert Stan Chilcott, who purchases a building near the rowing club in Lismore and actually put springs under the floor naming it the “Riviera”. Every Saturday night dancers and lovers of good music would flock to “The Riv” as it was affectionately known, hoping to dance with and maybe find a lifetime partner. Unfortunately Stan’s love for flying was to take him out tragically he died in an aircraft accident. From a memorial concert held for Stan the musicians decided to keep the music going by forming the band again.
The 18 player line-up and name of the band has changed several times over the years but there are still several original musicians giving their broad experience. Stan’s son Barry plays Tenor Sax, Owen Graham Baritone, Royden Ainsworth Alto, Les Wilson Trumpet, Roger Munsie Alto and Jim Fairfull, on vocals, all creating NRBB’s authentic sound. NRBB has attracted many new experienced musos including trombonist and vocalist Dean Doyle. Most play in several other bands but are always eager to play in NRBB when a gig is announced. NRBB is a highly organised band using the same line-up of skilled players.
Roger Munsie is the bandleader with Owen and Bev Graham dutifully taking care of the music library and distribution of music to players. There is a committee of members overseeing the constitution, venues, charities, and calendar on behalf of the band. NRBB only plays about 6-8 concerts per year, usually 3 hours, with audiences often over 400 and even up to 560.
Tickets for this Swing and Jazz Concert are available at the Roxy Gallery or from Gateway Office Supplies in Kyogle. There is a Family ticket available for (2 Adults & 2 children) at $35, Adults $15 and Concession $10. Seats are limited so get in early for this wonderful BIG BAND experience.
